Torii Tower

Torii Tower S4 & P2

A 3-way design that uses the same CSS W5-06 driver for both midrange and woofer duty. Below, the W5-06 in the small sealed chamber is the midrange; the W5-06s in the main volume are the woofers.

Enclosure

01

Check that every cabinet part arrived.

02

Clear dust from every corner and dado. Any debris in a joint prevents a tight, flush seam when you glue up.

03

Dry-fit the whole cabinet without glue to make sure every panel fits.

NoteRegional and seasonal humidity can mean a little sanding is needed to seat the braces.
04

Disassemble and lay the panels out for assembly. The front baffle’s tweeter-flange recess faces outward, the midrange chamber faces the midrange and tweeter, and the side with the brace cutout goes to the back.

05

Optional: pre-drill pilot holes for the crossover boards using the boards as templates. The TM board mounts on the side panel below the midrange chamber, behind the top woofer; the woofer board behind the second woofer.

CautionDon’t drill through the panel.
06

Glue the mating seams one set at a time, letting each set dry before the next. Dry-fit the opposite side panel to keep everything aligned.

07

Once the glue has cured, sand flush — the front and back panels overhang 1 mm on purpose. Fill any larger gaps with wood filler or Bondo and sand again.

08

Finish as you like: veneer, vinyl, paint.

02

Crossover

09

Check every crossover part arrived.

10

Place each component in its labelled spot on the SmartNode board, leads through the matching holes. Orientation doesn’t matter as long as you can reach the through-holes.

NotePull inductor wires up through the centre hole and back down if needed, so the lead isn’t crushed against the inductor when you cinch the zip ties.
11

Secure components with the supplied zip ties.

12

On the back of the board, twist together leads that share a letter (A to A, B to B to B), using hookup wire to jumper between nodes. No bare wires should touch unintentionally.

NoteCrossing bare wires from different letters can degrade the sound and damage drivers or your amplifier. Use insulated hookup wire to cross another wire.
NoteInductor wire is coated. Connect only to the pre-tinned silver leads, never the red portion, or you’ll create an open circuit.
13

Cut 8 wire lengths per speaker: 3 × 18″ from the top three woofers to the woofer board (+W−); 4 × 24″ for terminal cup → woofer board (+IN−), woofer board → bottom woofer, TM board (+M−) → midrange and TM board (+T−) → tweeter; 1 × 30″ from terminal cup → TM board.

14

Strip 3″ of white outer insulation from each pair and ¼″ of the red/black inner insulation from each end — a little more at the board end helps.

15

Red for positive, black for negative: feed each wire end through its hole on the SmartNode board and connect to the right lettered node, jumpering where needed.

16

Solder all twisted connections.

03

Final assembly

17

Mount the TM board on the side wall below the midrange chamber (behind the top woofer) and the woofer board behind the second woofer.

18

Feed the +M− pair through one hole in the bottom of the midrange chamber and mark it “M”. Feed the +T− pair through the other and mark it “T”. Leave a little slack near the board.

19

Crimp quick connects to the driver wires: large terminal on the red wire, small on the black.

20

Run both +IN− pairs down the back of the cabinet and out the terminal-cup hole. Twist the two reds together and crimp one large connector; repeat for the blacks.

21

Connect the terminal cups to the input wires, insert them and screw in with the #6 × ¾″ screws.

NoteQuick connects may need a gentle squeeze for a tight slide-on fit.
22

Place 2 pieces of denim in the midrange chamber, covering the back wall to 4″ thick.

23

Cut the eggcrate foam lengthwise into two 5.25 × 24″ pieces. Install one behind each woofer group, wrapping side → back → side over the crossover boards and set back slightly from the woofers.

24

Pull the “T” wire through the tweeter hole, slide the connectors on — large to large, small to small — and tug gently. If they slip, close them slightly with pliers. Screw the tweeter in, then repeat for the midrange and woofers.

25

Set the ports to 7.5″, fix with tape or glue, slide into the openings and screw in place.

NoteThe port openings are tight — use only a thin wrap of tape or a little glue.
04

Test

26

Connect to your amplifier and play something quiet.

CautionTest at very low volume first. Put your ear close to each driver: highs from the tweeter, lows from the woofers, and no crackling or static. If all sounds normal, turn it up and enjoy.

Troubleshooting

No sound from the whole speaker

Usually a problem on the amplifier side of the crossover. Check the input wires are properly connected at the crossover (including ground wires returning to the negative connection) and at the binding posts. Make sure stray wires or other metal aren’t shorting positive to negative.

No sound from one driver

Most often a bad connection in the crossover. Check that only matching letters share a connection point, that inductors are connected on the tinned (silver) lead and not over the insulation, and that nothing is loose.

Crackling sound

Usually a loose connection. Check every driver and binding-post connection, and that solder joints are solid with no movement in the joint. Look for bare wire touching where it shouldn’t. If you can’t find the source, contact us.

Amplifier shuts down

Likely a short — the amp is seeing little or no load. Look for bare crossover wiring touching where it shouldn’t, and make sure the binding-post terminals aren’t touching each other. If you can’t find the source, contact us.

Lack of bass

Check polarity is consistent inside and outside both binding posts — one inverted speaker cancels bass. Keep foam clear of the port openings, confirm the woofer is on the W +/− section of the SmartNode board (not T +/−), and that the port is cut to the correct length.
